As destination-based events continue to rise in popularity, Groove Cruise remains the blueprint of the industry. What began as an eccentric concept in 2004 with just 125 attendees has blossomed into a globally recognized music cruise that sells out year after year. Groove Cruise has paved the way for a new type of immersive festival; one that effortlessly blends music, travel, and community into an all-encompassing experience. From January 23rd-27th, Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas was transformed into a vast playground for adults, fit for every Captain eager to reconnect with their inner child. Hosted on the second-largest ship class in the world, it featured seven distinct neighborhoods, 40 bars and dining options, over 90 artist-led activities and excursions, and 12 stimulating stages blasting music all weekend long. Around 7:30 PM on Thursday, a prolonged horn blast rang out, sparking a brand new chapter in music festival history as the world’s largest music cruise officially set sail. Next stop: Labadee, a stunning private resort on the northern coast of Haiti.

As the ship began to sway with the ocean waves, reality started to sink in—my dream of attending Groove Cruise was unfolding right before my eyes. Not to mention, it was also my very first cruise, but as they say, go big or go home. All weekend long, I kept asking myself how I would find the words to capture the magnitude of my experience. Well, the GC organizers nailed it with their tagline, “A Transformational Journey at Sea” because I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Having attended 30+ festivals throughout my life, I’ve always longed to be surrounded by a festival community like the #GCFAM. The PLUR mindset was alive and well and was accompanied by an infinite supply of positive, uplifting vibes. There’s an undeniable sense of unity shared amongst everyone. At any given moment, you could find yourself engaged in a conversation with a stranger who may become a new friend. Watching people run up to one another and embrace with open arms, you’d think it was a family reunion. However, I soon learned that #GCFAM is one big happy family after all.

To foster a sense of community that fuels creativity, Groove Cruise presented two costume themes a day during the voyage, eight in total. Captains understood the assignment and embraced the themes with enthusiasm. Seeing everyone's costumes quickly became one of my highlights, with some earning extra credit for their dedication. Despite over 6,000 passengers aboard, no two outfits were alike. Every costume was met with a wave of compliments, no matter how whimsical they were. The ship was also redesigned with themed decor, transporting you to a new world each day.

Unlike most festivals bound by curfews, Groove Cruise was an endless odyssey of infectious beats. Sunrise sets seamlessly flowed into daytime pool parties, and the golden-hour skies gradually faded into twilight. As the twinkling stars emerged, they formed a mesmerizing backdrop that danced in perfect harmony with the music. At its core, the festival experience remained true and exhilarating, filled with surprises at every turn. On our way to the Casino, we found ourselves on a one-of-a-kind side quest; playing Twister in the elevator. It was the ultimate throwback, considering I haven’t played Twister in over a decade.

The biggest surprise of them all came during the Seven Lions throwback set on Saturday night. Halfway through his performance, he walked off stage only to return a minute later with Dimibo for their psytrance side project, Abraxis. I felt incredibly fortunate to be there, especially since Abraxis hadn’t graced the stage since Dreamstate 2022.

Groove Cruise delivered countless unforgettable moments, with very few areas in need of improvement. When we disembarked at Labadee, we only had about four to five hours to explore the island. There were plenty of excursions to partake in within that time frame, or you could simply relax on the beach or dance at one of the day parties. Personally, I chose the thrilling Dragon’s Breath Zip Line, a 2,600-foot zipline that soared above Labadee's pristine beaches and turquoise waters. While it was a once-in-a-lifetime endeavor, it soaked up an hour and a half, leaving me limited time to enjoy the rest of the island. Having at least six hours on the island would elevate the experience even further.

To say I was blown away by the stacked festival programming would be an understatement. The 96-hour schedule was meticulously crafted to appease all musical tastes and interests while mitigating crowd congestion. If you’re seeking an adrenaline-pumping dance party or a laid-back moment at the Whet Oasis, there’s something for every festival-goer. If you’re like me who is prone to FOMO and determined to try everything, the schedule was almost overwhelming. Between the ship’s all-inclusive amenities and various stages bumping music simultaneously, keeping up proved to be a challenge. But that’s the nature of any festival. If I had one piece of advice, accept that it’s okay to not stick to your itinerary. No matter what you engage in, it will be a soul-enriching adventure.

Groove Cruise is more than just a music festival; it reinvents what a festival can be. Transcending humble beginnings, it has become the gold standard for festival culture as a whole. From the vibrant energy of the dance floors to the breathtaking beauty of Labadee, Groove Cruise offers an unparalleled experience that’ll leave you with memories to last a lifetime. Whether you go on an exhilarating excursion, connect with new friends, or simply bask in the beats, every moment aboard is a celebration of life. From the minute you step off the ship, Jason Beukema, Founder of Whet Travel and Groove Cruise, invites you to carry the magic of Groove Cruise back home, in hopes of inspiring those around you. As they say on board, once you join the #GCFAM, you’re part of the family, and the journey never truly ends.
