INTERVIEW: Lost Kings on Sabrina Carpenter Collab, Upcoming Music & More

Lost Kings

DJ/production duo Lost Kings have had an exciting 2017. Following the release of collaborations with artists like Tinashe ("Quit You") and Fifth Harmony's Ally Brooke & A$AP Ferg ("Look At Us Now"), the guys shared their latest single "First Love" featuring Sabrina Carpenter back in October.

"First Love" was first debuted at New York City's Electric Zoo Festival, and saw an official release just over a month later on October 13th via Disruptor Records/RCA Records. The track hears Sabrina singing about comparing a new relationship to the feelings you experience with a first love. She sings, "We're just making waves different shades of emotions/Fast and slow, hot and cold/We bring out the worst and the best in each other/But can't let go/Oh, it's almost/Just like first love."

Lost Kings' Robert Abisi and Nick Shanholtz tell iHeartRadio that the idea for the song came about writing with LA-based singer/songwriter Delacey, and when they were thinking about features, the guys had actually heard from Sabrina's team that she was interesting in collaborating with the duo. "We heard from Sabrina's team that she was interested in working with us, and actually liked us. We were amazed by that," they explained. "We did two sessions with her. She was amazing in the studio. Her energy was great, her vibe was great, it worked out perfect for the song, and she just brought the song to a new level. We finished the idea and put it together, and it was all very seamless."

The guys add of working with Sabrina, "As soon as she walked in the studio it was like, uplifting vibes, and we were like, okay, I think we picked the right singer for this. We got along so well. And then we re-met again at Electric Zoo in New York and brought her out to perform the song for the first time, and just seeing her perform and everything, it was just great. She's on a different level of energy. She just knows what to do."

Aside from Sabrina's uplifting spirit, the duo explains that one of their favorite memories while recording "First Love" involved delicious chocolate chip cookies -- everyone's first love. Rob and Nick tell us, "At the studio, they bake really, really good cookies, and so we must have eaten a ton of cookies. And we took a picture with the cookies. It was chocolate chip. They're legendary. Like you'll just go through a whole rack. They usually bring up a plate, and we just went ham on the whole plate."

Having worked with artists like Sabrina, Fifth Harmony's Ally Brooke, A$AP Ferg, Tinashe, and Emily Warren, Lost Kings tell us they are definitely ready for more -- but that their next two singles will be solo releases featuring uncredited vocals. They explain, "The next two songs that we're putting out are just us. We have people singing on them, but it's kind of an unknown thing. So, the next two songs are gonna be new songs, un-featured. We're definitely gonna do more features down the road, but we wanted to do something a little different because we have done the bigger features, and we wanted to just change it up."

And speaking of features, the duo isn't done with "First Love" or Sabrina just yet. Lost Kings tells iHeartRadio that they'd like to work more with Sabrina, especially an acoustic version of their collaboration. "Sabrina's got a lot of great fans that are paying attention to us, and so we want to be able to put out music to keep the attention of our fans, but still have that focus on 'First Love' because we want to do an acoustic version," Lost Kings explain. They add, "We want to do more things with Sabrina that will still bring 'First Love' some [new] life."

While fans should keep an eye out for Long Kings' two upcoming singles, they can also catch them live not only on tour, but at their residency at the Wynn in Las Vegas. And the guys tell us that as much as they perform in nightclubs that are 21+, they'd also like to be able to get into venues that are all ages to cater to all of their fans. They tell us:

"One thing we want to do next year is get into more all ages venues. I feel like a lot of our fans can't come see us at nightclubs, so we want to do a lot more venues where people of all ages can come see our show."
